Choreographer, author, and educator Liz Lerman has worked for decades at the intersection of art, social purpose, and transdisciplinary collaboration, earning numerous accolades including a 2002 MacArthur Fellowship and a 2017 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award. Among her most impactful innovations has been the Critical Response Process (CRP), a structured, adaptable method for guiding feedback on work in progress in a way that is humane, generative, and highly motivating for the maker. Expanding to global use since its introduction in 1990, CRP is now the subject of a new book, Critique Is Creative: The Critical Response Process® in Theory and Action, coauthored by Lerman with contributions from over twenty practitioners in varied fields including education, art, humanities, religion, and science.
Sharing excerpts from the book, this lecture will explore questions of critique within academic contexts, challenging instructors and learners alike to consider the scope and limits of feedback within teaching, coaching, and mentoring. What’s the role of feedback in pedagogy? When is it happening and how can it be optimized to deepen learning and student autonomy? When should it yield to other methods? The lecture will be followed by a deep-dive panel of ASU-affiliated educators, facilitated by ASU Instructor and CRP Facilitator Phil Stoesz.
